Out of Place Wildlife

I will overlook, for instance, the program using the wrong kind of bear in some scenes, as only so many trained bears would be available for TV and movies. In one episode, Israel also adopted what was to me an unfamiliar type of deer--its tail was very different from a white-tailed deer. Anyone know what it was and where this type of deer might live? What I primarily mean here is animals referenced with which Daniel Boone would have had no contact and probably no knowledge. Grizzly bears are referenced in several episodes, including people claiming to have killed one, and there is even an episode called "The Grizzly." Grizzly bears do not and never have lived anywhere near Kentucky. In fact, when the Lewis and Clark expedition went west in 1803, they did not believe tales of a giant bear and were utterly shocked when they finally encountered one, which they saw no signs of until around what is now North Dakota. They may well have been the first white men to see a grizzly.

In the episode "The Ballad of Sidewinder and Cherokee," Mingo correctly terms himself "Cherokee," but Daniel Boone adopts the absolutely incorrect nickname of "Sidewinder." According to Google, "Sidewinders are found in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. In the southwestern United States, these snakes are found in southeastern California, southern Nevada, southwestern Utah, and western Arizona. In northwestern Mexico, they are found in western Sonora and eastern Baja California." Where in Kentucky would Daniel Boone have ever seen or heard of one? There is also a sequel, "The Return of Sidewinder" to compound the error.
