Ethel Waters

Having seen Ethel Waters' performance in the Season 6 episode of Mamma Cooper, all I can say is... wow.

Waters had such grace that came from her soul that even past seventy thirty pounds weightier than she was at her prime, with limited makeup and playing a mother, she still is one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.

I mean, always knew that Ethel Waters was talented but never to this degree. Easily this is the best episode of the last season, and might even be one of the best performances I've ever seen on television, although that's a little bold. What I do think I can get people to agree on though is that Ms. Waters deserved nothing less than an Emmy nomination for her performance.

Interestingly, this Jet Magazine article indicates that her name WAS submitted for a nomination by Barney Rozenzweig, who claimed to have been extremely impressed with her performance (p. 57):

What happened I don't know. Its pretty obvious that even into the 70s blacks (particularly black women) were still getting short-changed for awards. And factor into that the fact that Daniel Boone was constantly snubbed for Emmys anyway (likely due to the anti-Southern bias regularly displayed towards shows more popular with Southern audiences), I don't think it came as much of a surprise. Ethel had been through so much disappointment in her life I don't think it bothered her all that much - she should have been nominated for Oscars for her performances in Cabin in the Sky, Member of the Wedding, and The Sound and the Fury. Such a shame, really
