Frank and Margaret (Spoiler Within)

By modern standards, Frank raped Margaret, as she clearly told him she did not want to have sex and he then forced himself on her. But did audiences at the time see it as rape or, because that act proved to be the start of a consensual sexual relationship and her behavior towards him softened a bit thereafter, did they not?
