Would the Academy snub this film today ??

#OscarsSoWhite

For the second year in a row a film of this calibre would be snubbed by the Academy and that is a travesty. We should applaud these films and dust them off more often and not just in January.

I doubt it'd be snubbed - it's too perfect, in its way too quietly earth-shaking, too beautifully-but-simply told and photographed, with great performances all round, with the director himself appearing in the role of a bigot, and Jerry Goldsmith's warm, folksy score, it would climb to the top, by sheer public acclaim, and the Academy would truly be an amalgamation of dolts to snub it.

Today (2024) it would be nominated, and probably win in at least one major category, simply because it's about a black guy. Just as with all affirmative action, the credibility of such an "accomplishment" would be significantly compromised.
