Melvyn Douglas is amazing in this film

the scene that always sticks with me is after Hud and Lon have come home after drinking, and Douglas says to Lon (re. Hud):

'Little by little, the look of the country changes because of the men we admire. You're just going to have to make up your own mind, one day--about what's wrong, and what's right...'

words to live by...

'We all dream of being a child again - even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all...'

I, too, was very impressed with Melvyn Douglas's performance and the quote. I thought his acting was actually more striking than Paul Newman's, who's a great actor but perhaps a bit too comfortable in that handsome rebel role.

As for the quote, there's an awful lot of wisdom in it, especially when you see what the world is today and the people the young admire.

Melvyn Douglas was a completely deserving Oscar winner. He did a fine, fine job and based on his career on film, I'm not sure he would have leaped to mind when it came to playing a Texas rancher, but he sure came through.

He was. His embodiment of grief and despair as his cattle were shot was difficult to watch. Loved the way he found strength singing Clementine at the cinema.

Great character, if not always right, made glorious flesh by Mr Douglas.

No matter.
Try again, fail again.
Fail better.
