Was The Hilts Character An Ex-Baseball Player?

For him to have a baseball and glove, meant he carried it on an airplane with him. Was his obsession with baseball ever explained?

Were the Germans supposed to shake in their boots when they heard the sound of that baseball, which meant that Hilts hadn't given up on trying to escape?

Jesus Christ dude, he was an American. You know baseball, hot dogs.......Chevrolet??? What a DOLT!

Perhaps he had a bat as well but they wouldn't give it to him as it might be used as a weapon.

He said he was an ex motorcycle racer. But I guess he also liked baseball and had managed to get hold of a glove and ball somewhere (I doubt he carried them around in his plane). I don't think the Germans were quaking, but they did find his solitary ball-bouncing game curious.
