Just saw this film for the first time

And I thought it was very well done, especially considering it was released in a time when many in the U.S. were still suspicious of Catholics. Kudos to the film for also confronting honestly the difficulty of such serious issues as abortion, anti-semitism, racism, and World War II, and the flaws as well as the strengths the Church displayed at that time as regards those issues.

I saw this movie a couple of years ago. It's a bit melodramatic but is also a powerful depiction of the many "tempations" and "problems" that a catholic priest may overcome.

Another good movie with a similar subject (to some extent) is "El crimen del padre Amaro".

What are you talking about I was a teen in 1963 and don't recall any such thing?

reply

Especially since in 1963,the President was a Catholic. Of course we all know what happened to him...

reply

That had nothing to do with his being a Catholic.
I was there I know his being a Catholic people were thinking that Vatican policy
might become US policy.

It looked like to me for a while with GWB being "born again" we might have ended up a Christian Saudi Arabia

reply

Vatican. That's how you spell it. And many people, and by extension congress, were very concerned at the time of electing an official who might hypothetically be more loyal to the pope than the United States. Look it up. JFK had to address it in a very publicized media event while campaigning.

reply

Yes I know I was in a bit of a hurry.

JFK was very smart to do what he did during campaigning.

Yes, JFK, unlike "W" (and virtually all of todays Republicans), made it very clear that he would keep his religion out of the laws of the land.

reply

It's only a reaction to the Democrats' endless attempts to dismantle the 1st Amendment.

I was there....

You were where?

I just borrowed it from the library, and found it to be a riveting, still relevant film 60 years later. I read the Vatican was having meetings over LGBT issues, women in the clergy, and celibacy vows a few weeks ago. I highly recommend this film!πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ
