why was shirley knight nominated for best supporting actress??

She was nominated for supporting, not best actress.

I thought Knight was quite good with what she was given - it wasn't a particularly strong role but she made an impression. But if a supporting actress was to be nominated from the film it should have been Madeleine Sherwood as 'Miss Lucy", who really shines in just a few scenes.
