I love Annie Bancroft, if you could foresese the future, I'd have loved Davis to have won for the freak performance of near all time....her and crawford shot that film (well okay bob aldrich did) in something like 13 days cameras in cars etc ....compare that with La Hepburn, who is still Hepburn till about halfway through the movie, then turns in a stellar turn. but there have been lot better received "mother" in Long Days Journey Into Night.
Did you know they offered Violet from SUDDENTLY LAST SUMMER to Vivien Leigh, who turned it down....and Hepburn and Leigh were great friends, well given they were two of the top ten actress legends of all time (who else....i've got my list, you've got yours, but a couple others obviously Bette Davis, Meryl Streep and theni wont tell mine, lol)
Gerrie Page in this movie, each time I see it, i go wow! she should have won the oscar....but she did get it in 85 and deserved it...way better than the even Cicely tyson's heartfelt performanceon tv last year. SUMMER AND SMOKE is a fantastic turn.....I would have loved to see Page or Davis in VIRGINIA WOOLF?
We overlook Lee Remick way too much, what a tragedy how young she was when she passed...i remember one review said Lemmon broke our hearts in the movie, but Remick was light years above him in her performance (compare it to ANATOMY OF A MURDER)
So in summation, I think Bette Davis deserved a third oscar...it really should have been in 1950 for ALL ABOUT EVE, and Hepburn's fine enough to have two but three is too many and four is obscene. So if Bette would have won in 62, and Anne Bancroft's Mrs. Robinson is a more iconic role, I would have been happy to take away Kate's OH WE'RE SORRY SPENCER DIED award. She deserved it enough for THE LION IN WINTER (ANOTHEr year so many of the nominees and non-nominated....like Mia Farrow in ROSEMARY'S BABY) but didnt deserve it for Henry Fonda getting ready to die in 81....i throw it in 81 to Kathleen Turner, Simone signore (I SENT A LETTER TO MY LOVE) or????? Page in SWEET BIRD gives one of the greatest performances, but what can you do? I personally put Rosalind Russell in GYPSY in my winner's list at times....she's about the meaneast and most REAL Rose's of all time (when she takes silverware in the diner, when she asks Why do they always leave to Herbie, or before the Rose's Turn...too bad they blended in that stupid other voice with hers)
Okay I've rambled enough....THE MIRACLE WORKER scenes with Annie and Patti Duke are astral...can you believe there was talk of Liz Taylor as Teacher? and as much as I gave THE GRADUATE role of hers iconic status, it does lack a good "third act" of a character and performance, so things worked out more or less as they should.
