What an odd, uneven film (All the Spoliers)

So a very pretty, smiley France Nuyen pursues William Holden, a catholic priest, into a part of China about to be overrun by Communists. At a mission run by an irascible and misunderstanding Clifton Webb she is raped, smuggled away by Holden, returns pregnant and has the child whilst cared for by her rapist's parents. Eventually they flee to Hong Kong where she starts married life with the father of her child and she is still smiling and winking mischievously at Holden as he baptises the child with his name.
So it's part comedy, part tragic, part propaganda or history or both, and all thrown into the pot to emerge a lumpy uneven mess. I'd say it was only worth watching for France Nuyen but her very cute performance is so at odds with the rest of the film it all feels uncomfortably incongruous by the end.
