What was that liquid that Echo drank, shortly before (spoiler)

In a brief scene shortly before we learned that Echo had crashed her car and died we see her fetching a small bottle from her purse, pouring herself a small spoonful of some mysterious liquid, and then downing it. Since it was a smallish portion (no more than about a teaspoon) I'm assuming it was some sort of drug mixture, maybe something like Laudanum or some such. I wonder what it was she was taking, and why?

Make sure you learn music the right way! I knew a guy who learned music the wrong way. He was forced to play bad polka music the rest of his life until he died one day, penniless, slumped over his accordion on the sidewalk, and people merely stepped over his lifeless body.

Laudanum was my guess too. I recently found the book--it doesn't specify what it is but describes it as red, and I read on Wiki that Laudanum is reddish brown. By the way, the book is wonderful!!!

I just watched it on TCM and that scene was not in it. I thought TCM didn't cut movies.

I just watched it on TCM, and the scene is in it. It's a very short scene, under 10 seconds, so perhaps you missed it.

Same here.

I have no idea what liquid that might have been. It didn't look like cough syrup, or any "brand name" medicine.  

Maybe it was some sort of dope, as the OP implied.

Don't mess with me, man! I know karate, judo, ju-jitsu..... and several other Japanese words.

I thought about this a bit more. If it was laudanum, it would make it much clearer that the accident was intentional and a suicide. Laudanum was still a common drug back then. It is an opioid, and a heavy painkiller. It has a bitter taste, which would account for the reaction of putting her hand up to her mouth after taking it. One should never take laudanum and drive, it is much too powerful.

Echo may have taken it to ensure that either she would lose control of the car, or that her death would be considerably less painful after deliberately driving through the guard rail.

codeine?

Ephemeron.

Maybe she couldn't stay awake at the wheel when the drug took effect, eventually crashing, and it wasn't suicide.

I just read the book, and the liquid medication isn't named, but is said to be "for nerves".
