Loved it as a Child, but Lucy Needed New Writers

First of all, I used to love watching this in syndication during summer vacation. My sisters and I would watch it every morning. At first I didn't even know that Lucy had an earlier series so this was all fresh and funny to me. The first few seasons with Vivian Vance had some genuinely funny moments. Lucy and Viv always had a unique chemistry.

But after watching ILL, it's apparent that Lucille Ball was trying to recreate Lucy Ricardo. Lucy Carmichael was a pale imitation.

What Lucy needed desperately were NEW writers. You gotta admire her loyalty but for the sake of the comedy, she needed new stuff. The ILL writing team recycled too many of their old ideas. They were stuck in the past.
The other night I watched a few episodes including the episode where Lucy dates the handsome Frank Aletter and accidently hurts his hand. He's going to play the violin on stage so Lucy stands behind the curtain and does the bowing for him.

Shades of Lucy getting herself handcuffed to Ricky the night before he is going to perform on TV. They also wrote a hand switching scene when Lucy gets Elizabeth Taylor's eye popping diamond ring stuck on her finger. What's even sillier, Lucy the huge movie fan, doesn't even recognize Richard Burton when she first encounters him!
Geez, the writers had the Burtons on their show and that's the best they could come up with.

Lucy needed something new, not ILL retreads.
