Finally - a good Burt Lancaster movie

Excellent film, but most noticeably one where Burt Lancaster actually played a good part, did it well, and (as someone else said) deserved an award nomination for it.

What's more, it wasn't even a sympathetic role.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

He was indeed fine in this film. But it's quite clear that you have not seen many Burt Lancaster films to write a subject line like that. He had a huge ego and was not always the nicest of men, but he could act better than most who've ever performed on film.

Politics have always played the biggest part in who wins awards!
I just saw this film and really enjoyed it.

I can't recall seeing Lancaster in any film that he was not outstanding, Local Hero was amazing as well as Atlantic City, two of his later roles. Most of his roles are in classic films, how the OP could make such an outlandish statement is beyond my comprehension.

Big fan of Seven Days in May. Trying to think of a film were Lancaster was not good.

Thanks for pointers - you're right, I need to count 'Sweet Smell of Success' as good, and also track down 'Elmer Gantry'. I can handle "Come back little Sheba' and 'Separate Tables' too... though David Niven stole the latter one.

Movies where he wasn't so good...
- 'The Kentuckian'

I don't have much time for 'Eternity', 'Gunfight at the OK Corral'. 'Run Silent, Run Deep'... but that's just me, I'm sure.

If you get a chance watch "The Killers" and "Seven Days In May". Both are very good films and tell a story of men destroyed by their dreams. In this movie, his silence and facial expressions tell his story. And when he did speak, whoa, commanding and powerful.

If you believe this is Burt Lancaster's only good movie, then this must be the only Burt Lancaster movie you've ever seen.

Check out "The Train." Outstanding .... one of his many splendid performances.
