Anna's "wounds"

Okay . . . after decades of enjoying this film, something's finally occurred to me. Maria explains to Our Heroes how Anna was captured by the Germans and whipped until the whites of her bones showed. And, since then, she had neither talked about it or allowed anyone to see the scars.

So . . . if Anna didn't talk about it, or let anyone see the scars, then how did Maria or anyone else know Anna had scars?

reply

She had somehow communicated it, or perhaps the Germans had arranged for it to be known, perhaps?
