A Simple Story

You watch a film called 'Marienbad.' It's about a couple who have an affair at a luxury spa. It's all very straight-forward.

'Last Year in Marienbad,' meanwhile, is a film about a man who realises he's a fictional character in that very film, a man who proceeds to do all he can to convince the female protagonist to come with him, almost as if her agreement will somehow break him from the infinite cycle of being a fictional character in a film.

Ultimately, he fails. Because there is no way out of fiction.
