1st Dumb Dad Sitcom?

Okay not every single episode ends with Mr. B eating crow or being wrong but a lot of them do. Of course it was nothing like today's sitcoms where practically every father is portrayed as a manchild idiot.

No! That's not true at all, Elvis takes 50% of everything I earn!

See if you can find a DVD of THE LIFE OF RILEY.
That's a much earlier "dumb dad" sitcom.

You are so right! The poor guy didn't do too much that was right which is why he most likely frequently said "what a revoltin' development this is""

William Bendix as Chester Riley was dumbest TV sitcom dad ever years before Mr. B!

I have never heard of that show!
I had never heard of Hazel before a few months ago.....it's way before my time!

"Mr. B" wasn't dumb, it seemed that way because "Hazel" was really smart. He ate crow constantly because unlike "Mrs. B" and "Sport" who knew "Hazel" was extraordinary, "Mr. B" had that typical 60s TV dad ego where he never wanted to admit when he was wrong. The cool thing about "Hazel" was she was good at practically everything she attempted. She could cook like "Alice" and could play football like Johnny Unitas.

The inept husband/dad sitcom tradition goes back to the beginning of television programs in the 1940s, and even then it was a continuation of the inept husband/dad sitcom tradition on radio programs since the 1920s. Chances are you could find it in Greek comedies of a few thousand years ago.
