23rd or 24th Tarzan film?

The introduction on TCM said that this was the 24th Tarzan film, and the next week they said the following film was the 25th film in the series. By my count this is the 23rd film though. Am I missing one from the list below?

1. Tarzan the Ape Man (1932)
2. Tarzan and His Mate (1934)
3. Tarzan Escapes (1936)
4. Tarzan Finds a Son! (1939)
5. Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1941)
6. Tarzan's New York Adventure (1942)
7. Tarzan Triumphs (1943)
8. Tarzan's Desert Mystery (1943)
9. Tarzan and the Amazons (1945)
10. Tarzan and the Leopard Woman (1946)
11. Tarzan and the Huntress (1947)
12. Tarzan and the Mermaids (1948)
13. Tarzan's Magic Fountain (1949)
14. Tarzan and the Slave Girl (1950)
15. Tarzan's Peril (1951)
16. Tarzan's Savage Fury (1952)
17. Tarzan and the She-Devil (1953)
18. Tarzan's Hidden Jungle (1955)
19. Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1957)
20. Tarzan and the Trappers (1958)
21. Tarzan's Fight for Life (1958)
22. Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959)
23. Tarzan the Magnificent (1960)

Perhaps they were including the unaired TV pilot with Gordon Scott? ("Tarzan and the Trappers" was a combination of three episodes that were filmed but never picked up as a series.)

reply

They included Tarzan and the Trappers. The three pilot episodes were thrown together to become a made for TV movie and they featured it along with the films which received theatrical releases.

Even with "Tarzan and the Trappers", I still get 23. I was thinking the TV series might have been considered a separate entry?

reply

Then they probably miscounted.

TCM is can be pretty spotty when it comes to the more low brow forms of entertainment. A week or two ago, they showed a number of monster movies and I caught them making a number of mistakes when discussing those films.

To get 24 Tarzan films they must have included the silent film made in 1918 "TARZAN OF THE APES" - art P

The 23rd film is MGM's remake of Tarzan the Ape Man (1959) with Denny Miller - it came out after Greatest Adventure and before Magnificent

Is the 1938 movie "Tarzan and the Green Goddess" a possible inclusion in the list?

reply

Yes it is ... also known as "The New Adventures of Tarzan". ERB was involved in making that movie because of his disapproval of the monosyllabic Weissmuller films. However, the ERB film turned out to be awful, and was a dud. Also, it was filmed as a serial.
