One of the finest horror films ever made!

Mario Bava was an artist of the visual. He was the only director who could use a zoom lens well and get away with it.

The rumor mill: like Dark Castle, who began doing remakes of William Castle's films THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and THIRTEEN GHOSTS, another film company wants to begin remaking Bava's films -- starting with this one.

Big mistake.

It's the first of Mario Bava's that I've seen, just last night, though I have a few. I found it wonderful, a 9/10 for sure. I hope they don't remake it, but chances are, someday there will be a hideously inferior modern-day version, by someone who doesn't have the slightest understanding of what true horror is about. Oh well, we still have the original. And hopefully it'll soon be upgraded to blu ray, with tons of extras! =)

Yes, I watched the film for what I believe is the 4th or 5th time and it never gets old. As a matter of fact it just gets better with each viewing. I love the classical, eerie, Gothic atmosphere and Barbara Steele is incredible. This is starting to become one of my favorite movies.

Visually the movie looked great but the storyline wasn't very original (it was almost like watching Dracula) and that cheesy love subplot was totally unnecessary and drained much life from the movie. If you've seen one gothic horror movie you've seen them all because almost all of these movies look like they were filmed on the exact same "creepy gothic mansion" set and their plots are very similar (but Bava's direction does make this one stand out from the crowd a little bit).

There's a 1967 Russian movie called Viy based on the same story as this one (though Black Sunday doesn't really have much to do with Gogol's original story) - now that movie is great! There are some really bizarre and memorable images in that movie and the whole set design (based on the Eastern European folk architecure) felt much more inspired.

While I absolutely adore this film and seriously disagree with your assessment of it, I must give you props for shining some light on Viy. That film is begging for a beautiful Blu-Ray edition full of extras, but sadly it remains so obscure even relative to Bava that we may have to wait a while for such a thing, if it is to happen it all.

Warning! The Monster is loose!
