Missing scene?

I already posted this on the I Need to Know board but, maybe this is a better spot. Does anyone remember there being a scene in this movie years ago which is not there now? Specifically just before the scene on the boat where Paul Newman kisses Joanne Woodward for the first time. My Mom seems to recall that there used to be a scene just before where Newman is in a small rowboat and Woodward is on the big boat and she picks him up. At the end of the scene where they kiss on the boat the camera pans from them to the rowboat tied to the big boat but, the rowboat is never explained.

So funny, I just came online to ask this same question. My mom and I watched this on AMC, and it awkwardly cut from Joanne & Paul meeting at the party to them in the rowboat, macking down. I thought there has to be a scene missing! My mom said the same thing yours did. What gives? Why did they cut it out?

I've seen this movie many times since about 1980 on, it being a favorite of my family. And I have never in that time seen what I'll call the "missing scene". Even our old VHS and our new DVD versions didn't have the "missing scene".

I see, that makes it even more peculiar. When we watched it on AMC, I just assumed the network had edited it out for time, but based on what you say, it's gone completely. Maybe when they transferred the movie to VHS or disc, that scene was missing from the original film.

that's the good movie ever

Did they see the movie at a preview? Sometimes after a movie is in limited released but before nationwide release, they will edit out scenes for time, ones that didn't get good response, etc.
I've seen this on AMC, Fox, a VHS tape, and the scene is never there.

Now that you mention it, this film does look "choppy" at the time the scene is switched to the part with Newman and Woodward in the boat - looks as if part of the film was cut out - I remember thinking it looked "odd" when watching it.

I hope there isn't a scene missing, but you can never tell. I had the same problem tracking down "whole" versions of "They Won't Believe Me" and "Laura". I originally saw "From the Terrace" on AMC and now own a copy on VHS...I always assumed the cut from them making out on the sail boat to the shot of the dinghy referred to Newman's (paraphrased) comment that if Woodward didn't want him kissing her/was afraid to be alone with him, he'd take her back to shore (on the dinghy). The ensuing silence and shot of the empty dinghy speaks volumes!

I saw this film as a child with my mother and I seem to remember Newman rowing out to the sloop as well.....

I just rented this from Netflix, saw it last night for the first time. I thought the editing in the beginning was choppy, and actually thought for a moment maybe it might have been the dvd skipping! My copy was fine. I think something was cut out along the way....

Maybe this mattress will spin on its axis and find me on yours.

reply

Don't know about that, but the version I saw did show signs of sloppy editing -- jump cuts, etc.

reply

There was no transition to the boat scene.
However the movie was quite long and what was cut probably help to move the movie along
The abruptness brought home the point that these two were not a romantic couple

They also cut the submarine scene. I distinctly remember it from when I saw this movie in 1960.

I'm sure it was edited out to fit in commercials. I hate when that happens. I never saw the scene your Mom refers to, but it makes perfect sense.
