I was the Director

It is wonderful to read how many people enjoyed, and remembered this film. It was my first feature film, and I had a great cast and crew.

Mr.Moxey, or, John, thank you for tackling a subject matter no one else would. This film is bold, exciting, atmospheric, and, well, excellent. It is an honour being able to commute with you, and I have one question. While making this film, did you get any flack from church organization, pta, etc? Considering that this is 1960, and undead witches honouring satan seems like a touchy subject for it's time. But anyways, thank you for making a film that can genuinely frighten me. There are few people who have done that, and you did it with class. Cheers.

Overall, I think this is a good, above-average horror film, but I have to admit that the ending freaks me out as few movies ever did. When the half-dead boyfriend revives and carries the cross around, smiting the witches -- I don't know why, but the scene is awesome beyond words.

Any insights on how you made the scene so effective? It's not just the writing but the execution, something about the look -- the shadows, the movement -- that I cannot put my finger on.

I have to say, we have the DVD, and others of Moxey's. Very enjoyable.

Thank you, sir. All the best to you.

Dear Mr. Moxey
I just picked up my uncut DVD of "City of the Dead" today. Thank you so much for directing this movie! It's one of my favorite old-school horror films... I love the atmosphere, and the "Psycho" like twist of the lead character getting it halfway through, leaving the supporting cast to solve the mystery of her death. Christopher Lee is one of the finest actors who ever lived. Everything is just terrific. Thank you so much.

I can`t believe it! The great John Llewellyn Moxey posting here! WOW! Hey John, Horror Hotel is apparently considered to be public domain and can be found and downloaded at http://archive.org. I don`t think what is posted there is a restored print but it sure is well worth the download and it`s free.

To Mr. Moxey:
I just want to compliment you on your fine work directing two of the all-time best/scariest horror films, City of the Dead (AKA Horror Hotel), and The Night Stalker. They just don't make fright films like these anymore.

Dear Mr. Moxey. You can't imagine how much I was surprised this very night when I found you are posting here. At first, I thought it was a hoax or something. I have seen this movie three or four times since I got it, and every time I become more and more fascinated. Like most of people, I came to this movie by chance. I am from Spain and I bought a DVD pack from the USA, containing old horror movies, most of them mere curiosities -I thought. I couldn't imagine what a wonderful gem it deserved. I also watched your movie "Circus of Fear", and recently I have been revising some old "Kung Fu" episodes directed by you. We could say I am fully in the process of knowing your work. It is a real honor to be able to talk directly to you. Let me express my admiration and also my regret that such personal and fundamental movies like "Horror Hotel" don't have the wide recognition they deserve. I hope you keep coming down the board to discuss any matter. I would really appreciate it. It would be an unexpected luxury that you could tell us about the making of this film in particular.Thank you very much.

Mr. Moxey, I probably saw this as a child myself, but I honestly don't remember. Lately I've had a Hammer/Amicus "desire" and researching films from both studios. And I noticed this one is well thought of across the net. I'm really anxious to see it. DDD has it for only 6 bucks. I'm still too broke to pick ut ip right now. Unfortunately that'll be the case until after October. Yep, that sucks. I read one review that sort of compared it to Blair Witch Project in the type of scares you get. Neat!

I was looking over your body of work and it looks as if I've enjoyed your efforts for years! The Saint, The Avengers, Kung Fu, etc. I notice you even did that Genesis II thing for Roddenberry. I hate that your TV movie San Francisco International is a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. :D I actually love Airport style flicks and have since I was little. That's one of my favorite episodes of that show. An official release would be great. You're not holding out on the rights are ya? ;)

You hit a home run your first time out, sir. This is an absolutely brilliant, one of a kind film. Few people who see it ever forget it. In fact, I watched it twice last night!

It scared me 35 years ago on TV. I just saw it again, and it still does. One of my favorites, and reminds me how much fun it is to be truly frightened by a great horror film. A real gem!

Mr.Moxey, Is there any chance of a soundtrack? I would love to own the music for this film, especially the chant. The film is a masterpiece by the way. Reminds me so much of a Mario Bava film.

dear lovely Jane,

if you like this Mr Moxey´s classic film, you will also love the italian giallo maestro Mario Bava. Bava also made the same type films like Mr Moxey in that same periode.
