Not that impressed...

I usually love these types of movies from the 50's and 60's but this one left me bored.

The acting was excellent. I just think it moved along too slowly. Was the one guy a racist or was he just fighting for the last woman on earth? Not very clear.

4 out of a 10.

I loved it. lol honestly how fast could you expect a movie like this to move along? there's no frame of reference because nothing outside of the three people in the film takes place. its a wonderful film and story. I could watch this forever I didn't feel it dragged at all.

well it looks like the person who wasn't impressed IS ALONE!

reply

Like the characters in the movie the OP is not alone. It seemed like an extended Twilight Zone episode. The characterizations and dialog were lame and the film left me unconvinced that this is how people would behave in this situation. What happened to everyone else is vague. There are no bodies lying about though we see what looks liked crashed vehicles. Interesting premise weak delivery.

Interesting that you would think Ferrer was the racist. The information for this film mentioned. "A man, a woman, and a bigot survive after an apocalypse/war".
Seeing Belafonte was headline, I assumed Ferrer would be the bigot, but as it turns out, Belafonte is the bigot, as he is the one unwilling to overcome the predisposed prejudices he was brought up with. He wouldn't touch the white woman despite her advances, he wanted to provide the sermon for her wedding, but not be the groom, he wanted Ferrer to chase her after the argument to be with her, so they could be the white couple, instead of bi-racial as she had fallen in love with him.

You had to see it in context. These days everyone is used to action. Even as a kid growing up in the 60s it was one of my favorites and changed a whole genre. Stunning piece of filmmaking and brilliant acting. One of my favorite Belafonte films. Something that isn't pressed in the film was it was very forward, Belafonte wasn't a miner he was a mine engineer. Most films would have made him a coal miner. Very important later when he restarts several blocks in New York. His character was intelligent and thoughtful which was highly unusual for the period. I'm sure it was that main reason Belafonte did the film. It was one of the most important films of the period and easily ten years ahead of it's time.

I do think the filmmakers were confuzzed about what it should be. Basically it was Jewish communist political propaganda to get western nations to disarm.
Then they had to think up some other ways to fill the time.
The romance is no big deal. And like someone said, it's not clear that Ferrer is a racist. Sure it's an interesting fantasy.

What's your cue as to the Judaism in the film?

Two men and the last woman on earth is lusty and hot. No racism. They would have fought over her regardless.

Might have been more interesting if one of the two men was gay. Then the woman and the gay guy would fight over the straight guy.
