Does Sarah get off too easily?

How about "this is no time to get pregnant with those radioactive elements around and no OB/GYNs practicing at the moment."
She really wants them to decide her fate.

Maybe the black guy had medical skills as well.

Absurdity: A Statement or belief inconsistent with my opinion.

With the white guy as midwife?

I see sort of a strong underlying feminist theme in this film. Sarah says several times that she has opinions, but she never states them. She is the last woman in the world, but her training to defer to men is still there. She is in love with Ralph, but she never says it and he won't make the first move. It's complicated by the fact that an inter racial screen kiss would have been a big deal at the time and would have kept the movie out of every theater in the south. That last scene really needed one, but they couldn't do it. Nonetheless, we are intended to think that they are going to go off and have this three person marriage.
I'm not a big fan of remakes, but it would be pretty cool to remake this one just because they could do those things. I think it should still be set in the '50's though.

Closest thing to a remake of this great film would be 'The Quiet Earth' (1985), by Geoff Murphy .
