Good Submarine / Commando Movie

I understand why some thought the commando portion was a little drawn out. Remarkably, James Garner’s character is filmed taking a nap during that portion which contributes to people saying it was undramatic and prolonged. But the writers needed him to have dream sequence to return the beautiful Andra Martin’s character somewhat back into the story. (I thought it very cool for the 1950’s that she played an undercover naval intelligence officer but unfortunate we never find out what happens with her and Garner’s character). Garner was great as the All American frogman and the technical submarine operations stuff was very interesting to watch. Seeing a young skipper from Gilligan’s Island was great and he was the only comic relief so he had some good scenes.

I also heard Frank Gifford, between NFL seasons, played one of the young officers on the sub but I didn’t spot him. This role would have occurred just before Gifford’s NFL career effectively ended on an incredibly vicious hit by linebacker Chuck Bednarik in the 1960 season which left Gifford unconscious and taken from the field by ambulance. The tackle is often mentioned as one of the most violent in NFL history:
