Why can't they remake great movies like this???

Seriously. Some of these classic sci-fi could really be improved on in modern times, yet for some reason, they only remake movies that were fine in the first place.

At the same time, I don't want to see Alex Rogan playing Chikyû Boueigun Surî on his Xbox.

People are always asking why they don't remake certain movies. Well, that's part of the problem with movies these days- it's mostly remakes or remakes of remakes, trying to capitalize on past successes or cult status without the creativity required of the original. Movies like this one could not be recreated and retain the same "qualities" we know and love about such films. A title like "Teenagers from Outer Space" would sound very silly today.

I think it WAS remade...as an episode of The Twilight Zone entitled "Black Leather Jackets," in 1964.

Although I think TfOS has a strong story, I'm not sure a teenager movie is as marketable today as it was in the 1950s. You do see an awful lot of the same elements in TfOS in other movies - the good alien being chased by the bad alien (Terminator 2), invasion and domination (Transformers 1, 2, & 3).

At it's heart TfOS is a trans-species Romeo and Juliet story, taking the Patricia Neal/Michael Rennie relationship from The Day the Earth Stood Still and chopping their ages down by a generation.

"taking the Patricia Neal/Michael Rennie relationship from The Day the Earth Stood Still and chopping their ages down by a generation."

Not quite a generation--At twenty-five, Neal was only six birthdays past her teen years when she made "The Day the Earth Stood Still"!

There certainly isn't anyone writing anything today that is close to this, so we just get remakes.
Maybe Hollywood should stay out of political messaging and make entertainment instead.
