You gotta love those Dutch steel helmets

They made the Netherlandic soldiers look like space zombies from a lurid 1980's science fiction movie.

After the Germans disarmed the Netherlandic army, they later issured the distictive helments to a Croat unit that was fighting on the Axis side in the Balkans.

I noticed this distinctive helmet. Never saw it before. Somewhere between a pot helmet and a Germanic sallet type. Very interesting for those interested in helmets.

I don't know much about helmets except what I see incidentally in movies and books. That's the first time I have ever heard what must be the correct term "sallet" for the German helmet, which some writers have refered to as "coal scuttle helmet" after a now nearly extinct type of pail people used the carry coal in when they heated their houses with coal furnaces. My dictionary reveals a sallet to be a 15th century type, which is not surprising. The helmet used by the British and American armies in WWI are closely based on another common medieval type.
