Pumice stones? Why?

Why?

How in the world did the thought cross their minds to eat this? Were they doing it for, pardon the pun, sh!ts and giggles? Or did they think there was some hidden power from eating it?

They thought it would make them fart more easily. Where did they get the idea from? Well, you know kids...

I missed the beginning, so thank you! So I guess Philip Seymour Hoffman wasn't the first person who 'sharted' in a film.

Yeah, it actually caused me to google whether there were any myths/urban legends about benefits of eating pumice stones, but I found nothing.

Did everyone in this thread sleep through the same scene? The boys state explicitly that one of their fathers told them eating pumice powder would improve their farting. A little later they mention it to the translator neighbor and he tells them, "He was just teasing you" but they ignore him.
