Why did Judah have to compete..

Why did Judah have to compete in the chariot race? It seems very dangerous and i feel like i missed what his motivation was? Is it explained or have i missed it?

Get revenge on Messala. Anything to get back at him for imprisoning his mother and sister and (as far as he knows according to Esther) letting them die in prison. By beating him at the race, he would be humbling his holier-than-thou Roman pride. Via Shiek Ilderim's money bidding, he would bankrupt Messala financially. There is also the possibility, in the danger factor you mentioned, Messala might get killed.

Because he's Judah Ben Hur and he can do whatever the hell he wants!
