The most handsome actor

Someone posted the most gorgeous actress thread so I thought I'd create this one. Hands down for me is Robert Redford. Although in his ep nothing in the dark when he calls the old lady " mother" its a bit of a turn-off its just weird.

reply

Yes, this thread is for us women!

Robert Redford, beyond gorgeous. There was also another man, I forgot his name, I think it's William something, from The Purple Testament. He was insanely beautiful.

reply

totally Robert Redford. But there are some other cuties:

Edson Stroll (Walter Smith in Eye of the Beholder- the guy who takes Janet off to her new life with those who look like her.
Liam Sullivan (Jamie Tennyson in the Silence))
William Shatner (naturally)
Richard Long (I used to love in The Big Valley and Nanny and the Professor)

Well, let's say it's for people who appreciate attractive men. 😉

I replied to a post about this quite a while ago, but I think it's one of the older threads that's been taken down, as it's no longer among the list of posts in my profile.

Here's a top twelve:
1) Kenneth Haigh - "The Last Flight" (I have a particular fondness for Englishmen.)
2) Rod Taylor - "And When the Sky Was Opened"
3) Roddy McDowall - "People Are Alike All Over"
4) Russell Johnson - "Back There" and "Execution"
5) Michael Forest - "Black Leather Jackets" (and in The Dick Van Dyke Show and Star Trek)
6) Richard Long - "Number Twelve..." & "Person or Persons Unknown"
7) Robert Duvall - "Miniature"
8) James Best - "The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank" & "Jess-Belle" (and in The Andy Griffith Show)
9) Robert Redford - "Nothing in the Dark"
10) William Shatner - (We all know his episodes.)
11) Dick York - "A Penny For Your Thoughts" & "The Purple Testament"
12) Kevin McCarthy - "Long Live Walter Jameson"

reply

Definitely a 3 way tie between William Reynolds, Robert Redford and William Shatner for sure..

reply

William Reynolds, that's his name! Thank you EastsideVixen!!

reply

You're very welcome .. he sure was a cutie 😊

reply

Oh yes, "Walter Smith", from Eye of Beholder. He was sooo handsome. He seemed to be the quintessential 60s hunk, from what I've seen of old movies/T.V

reply

I'm also watching to serve men

reply

Right now I am watching "To Serve Man". I find Lloyd Bochner very handsome!

reply

I can't believe my hotties thread from the last marathon is still going.

“Willoughby, sir? That’s Willoughby right outside. It’s July. It’s summer. It’s 1888.”

reply

Remember he was in Dynasty, but Joan Collins got him pushed off for his lack of chemistry with her.

There were so many beautiful actors on this show, male and female.

reply

Lloyd Bochner played a sinister dual role in a memorable THRILLER episode, PRISONER IN THE MIRROR.

The ending is terrifying. Wouldn't watch it again for a long time.

Currently on Youtube.

reply

For me hands down William Shatner, love him then, love him now.

reply

the guy who plays the devil in howling man has the most gorgeous eyes!

reply

You didn't exactly go out on a limb with Redford. "He's no Robert Redford" would be a line on many shows during the 70's and into the 80's.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

It's almost shocking to see just how good Shatner looked young - he had the face of an an angel. Talk about aging badly...😨

reply

Eva- Yes, all that extra weight, booze...and secrets!

reply

And lack of hair!

reply

I don't know many other 85 year olds that looks as good as Bill does, weight and all. =P Haters!

reply

What?! No one chose Rod Serling? For me, he's right up there with Llyod Bochner. I love Lloyd as "The Dream" in "The Night Walker", and in the Carol Lynley version of "Harlow". Ohhhh...that voice!!! Dennis Hopper completes my list of the handsomest actors.

reply

I've always liked Robby the Robot.

reply

Perhaps Robby the Robot developed a crush on Anne Francis during the filming of "Forbidden Planet". Maybe he found out she did two episodes of "The Twilight Zone" and went over there to see her, and Rod gave him two episodes of his own.

reply

She really looked diff with dark hair when she played Jesse Belle in that season 4 hour long ep with the witch.

reply

Okay- Rod is super hot. But I thought he was off limits on this topic.

Also, he was very very short.

Jennie, I didn't realize Rod was 5' 4". According to IMDb Dennis Hopper's height was 5' 9". However, I find this questionable as I have watched an episode of Loretta Young's TV show "Letter to Loretta". Dennis and Loretta were the same height (and Loretta was wearing flat shoes). I always though Dennis was very sexy and appealing in the film "Night Tide". Yet, I'm inclined to think he was shorter than IMDb's info that he was 5' 9" because IMDb says Loretta was 5' 6".

reply

Everyone lies about their height. Especially in IMDB. Not by a small amount either. People lie by as much as 5 inches.

I have a story about this. A few years ago, I was walking on Central Park South. I see Al Pacino walking towards me! OMG!! I think, but I don't say anything. Don't gush about seeing the star of one of my favorite films (Godfather).

Al Pacino's bio on IMDB says he is 5'7" (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000199/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm)

I am 5'6" (okay, I am really 5' 5 1/2"- -see, even I lie). Al Pacino (wearing cowboy boots!) walks past me. He is half a head shorter than I am!

Look at this scene from the Godfather and how it is filmed. https://youtu.be/voNs3aHZmQM

Diane Keaton (whose height according to IMDB is 5' 6 1/2") and Al Pacino are walking on a road. She is on the downside of an incline. He is wearing a hat and walking on the upside of the incline. And she is still taller than him!

reply

Nice anecdote about Al Pacino. I never knew he's supposed to be 5' 7" (according to IMDb). I figured he was between 5' 9" and 5' 10". I knew Alan Ladd was short. IMDb says he was 5' 6 1/4". I heard he used to stand on a box when playing scenes with certain actors and actresses. I also knew Mickey Rooney was short. I wasn't surprised when I saw him on Broadway with Ann Miller in "Sugar Babies" during a trip to Manhattan. It's safe to say that Mickey had charisma and gave a towering performance in spite of his height.

reply

I do wish I had gotten to see Sugar Babies. I had heard that he and Ann Miller were wonderful-- especially considering their ages at the time. Back in the day, Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland were great together and their short heights actually complimented each other.

Some say that movies are the "Short man's revenge" because diminutive actors may appear far taller than they really are. I like to watch Game of Thrones and the character of Tyrion Lanaster is played by Peter Dinklage, who identifies himself as being a "dwarf" (he is 4'5"). I notice how the shots in which he appears are staged and it is amazing how large he ends up appearing. In most scenes he appears in the frame by himself, so he fills the entire screen. Of course, in scenes where he appears next to anyone, he appears tiny.

Oh, "Sugar Babies" was fantastic! Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller worked wonderfully together. Standing ovation central. I agree that Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland were great together and their short heights actually did compliment each other. (Mickey was 5' 2" and Judy was 4' 11 1/2" according to IMDb.) They clicked on-screen like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers did. Many magical movies! When I think of Peter Dinklage, I can't help but thinking "You go, boy! You go!" I think diversity and inclusion is a major, long-awaited step forward for Hollywood.

reply

Peter Dinklage can do anything. I could definitely see him doing Hamlet. He would actually be perfect for that role. If you want to read an amazing interview with him it is at this link. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/01/magazine/peter-dinklage-was-smart-to-say-no.html

It is an astonishing story that should be required reading for anyone interested in how a motivated person can do anything if s/he puts her/his mind to it.

I totally agree about Peter Dinklage being able to play Hamlet. Thanks so much for The New York Times link. You provide such cool links and it's really very appreciated.

France has a well-loved actress named Mimie Mathy. She's 4' 4". She's in TV Movies, TV Series, a regular on variety and talk shows, and appears on many TV commercials.

reply

According to Rooney himself in his autobiography, he was 5'3" tall. Seems about right.

reply

The Rod who was "super-hot" was Taylor!

reply

Rod Serling HAS been mentioned in similar threads. That dark hair and that voice!

I haven't seen Robert Culp mentioned. He was in at least one TZ episode that I can remember: King 9 Will Not Return. He's very good looking...great actor...kinda sexy slyness there. I especially liked him in the Outer Limits...but that's another board!

reply

Jeberkin --
Awww... you're right! Mea Culpa. Robert Cummings was pretty handsome. Oh, I just loved Robert Culp in those Outer Limits episodes.

reply

Definitely agree with Redford. He was a very clean-cut, kind looking guy in those days. If I was in to men, that would probably be my "type".

reply

I think of Redford as the last truly classically handsome major Hollywood star. These days only Clooney matches that type, but he's so severely lacking in charisma and sexual energy that he's almost not even worth mentioning.

reply

Burt Reynolds is much more my cup of tea regarding the last of the truly handsome major Hollywood stars. He was so sexy back in the "Deliverance" days. George Clooney does nothing for me. He lives in Italy, but he is assuredly quite dull and unsexy compared to those virile macho latino Italian denizens.

reply

Yeah, what is with his Clooney's total lack of sex appeal? You look at his pic and by all logic he really should be attractive - he has all the right old Hollywood features and really rocks suits. But the energy he projects is just totally asexual. All you feel like doing with him is sipping a latte...

As for the second sentence - 'macho' in Spanish means 'outdated chauvinistic pig'. I wouldn't guess that it's much more flattering in Italian. Those deeply rooted Italian attitudes towards women are not just unsexy but result in a disastrously low birth rate. Women there wait until past 40 to have 1 child because they don't get much help with child-rearing and are expected to be full-time mothers.

reply

I was using the word "macho" in its English form (as in "macho-man") in the sense where it means assertively virile and sexually active. I found in certain parts of Southern Italy women tend to stay at home in the old-fashioned way. In Central and Northern Italy women are certainly more modern.

Italian men are very sexy, but are well-known to be extremely vain Latins. Italians spend 30% of their wages on their lovely clothes. Truth be told, Italians are rated Numero Uno in EU polls regarding sexiness, culinary skills, fashion and cleanliness. The runners-up are the French.

You might find it hard to believe the rituals the Italians go through after their morning shower; fingernail and toenail grooming, assortments of face, body and foot creams, deodorants, colognes and perfumes, and the hairstyles done to perfection.

Regarding the potty...they first use toilet paper, but then they use bidets to clean their fannies good with soap, water and a cloth. The French do this too. Vanity?... perhaps. But the people of these two Latin countries put people in the US and the UK to shame. Questa è la vita/C'est la vie. LOL!

UPDATE: Eva_Marrie, I've checked on things you've said. Your whole second paragraph is inaccurate...

No! "Macho" in Spanish doesn't mean "outdated chauvinistic pig". It means very masculine ("muy masculino"). I checked at The Free Dictionary (www.thefreedictionary.com).

Italians do not have deep-rooted attitudes towards women, and they are not having disastrously low birth rate in Italy. This year it's been reported that Italians are having 1.39 birth rate compared to other EU countries which are having 1.58 birth rate. That's less than 1/5 of 1% of 100%. It's not a big deal. Last year Germany had the lowest birth rate in the world (passing Japan's low birth rate). I checked at the BBC on-line.

The women in Italy who are having babies past 40 are a minority just like the teenagers who are having babies in Italy. The majority of mothers in Italy are in their 20s and 30s, and they aren't child-rearing without fathers. Your information is very untrue. Please be careful in your messages on IMDb. It isn't nice to misinform strangers on the Internet.

reply

Please be careful in your messages on IMDb. It isn't nice to misinform strangers on the Internet.

I'm not misinforming - I'm just using information in a more coloquial and not literal way as you are.

I speak Spanish and know a lot of practical meanings of words in a Mexican context. The word 'macho' is related to the concept of 'machismo': a Latin American brand of chauvinism as defined by Latin American feminists in the 70s. The brand of masculinity that word is tied to IS outdated and anyone with modern attitudes would in practice use it in a negative context - to mean: "get with the times, man". If they meant someone is very masculine, than they would just say that exactly: 'muy masculino' or use a slang word. Dictionaries don't always capture these nuances.

As for having babies past the age of 40 - it's a well documented phenomenon in Italy: I didn't literally mean that everyone does it. But it is common among professional women and motivated by gender roles still lagging behind. In developed countries with higher gender equality and more equal parental duty distribution the birth rate edges closer to 2, because women know they won't be stuck with changing all the nappies alone and will be able to go back to work. I wasn't implying the Italian women are all single mothers - just that too often the fathers don't help carry the child-rearing load equally, thinking of it as 'womens' work'.

And of course Italians are sexy and would rival show poodles in grooming routines! As far as I'm concerned, all men should be like this! (that's why I really hate the word 'metrosexuality') I really shouldn't have gotten so sensitive about these definitions - I know you just meant 'macho' casually. It's just that whenever women express sexual longing for any kind of old-fashioned attitudes in men ("where have all the real men gone?" kind), I just see red.

Because this new brand of feminist men the past couple of generations have created are a precious hard-won victory. We need to idolise them, not shame them about not being The Malboro Man. I was talking about looks alone and then saw your combo of 'macho' , 'virile' and 'Latino', probably misinterpreted and went into my feminist rage panic mode...

reply

Oh, okay. I see your points. In English the term "macho" is normally used to indicate someone who is dark-haired and masculine looking (a Latin or a Latin American). Malaysia is having low birth rate this year, too. It's something that happens in countries. I believe it's occurred in the US and the UK as well. Goverments use media scares to arouse their nations. 1/5 of 1% of 100% is not a big deal when it comes to low birth rate. The governments of Italy, Malaysia, Germany (last year the country with lowest birth rate in the entire world) and Japan use these "national emergency" scares to bring birth rates back up.

In the US many Latin Americans are the love ya and leave ya type. I have a friend in the US who is of Italian/Irish ancestry. She loves the Latin American-type (who can be very sexy). However, she keeps meeting men who promise to stay with her (without an actual marriage), get her pregnant and run off when the baby is in its infancy. She's done this time and time again. She always gets upset (you can't blame her). I'm sure those men were good lovers, but now she's got a bunch of kids from different fathers and has always been a single mom.

Earlier we were discussing George Clooney. He should fit the classic Hollywood type, but there really is something "asexual" about him. He's missing that certain je ne sais quoi. I think Clark Gable was the best-looking classic Hollywood star. Followed by the pre-1940 Robert Taylor when he was allowed to have a full head of wavy hair (sans Brylcreem and pencil moustache). James Cagney and Spencer Tracy weren't glamour boys, but were darn good actors. Ginger Rogers, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Rita Hayworth were glamorous women. I think today's stars are sorely missing two things: glamour and presence.

UPDATE: Regarding having babies past 40 being well-documented phenonenon in Italy...where did you find this out? I found one case in the on-line edition of the UK's Daily Mail of a woman in Italy shocking doctors by having a baby at 54. I found Daily Mail stories saying that in Britain the number of women giving birth in their 40s has trebled in the last 30 years from 4.9 per 1,000 in 1984 to 14.7 per 1,000 in 2014.

jeberkin, NO! Absolutely not. I won't be doing any of that. This is my IMDb account...NOT yours. You can simply put me on your "Ignore User" list so you don't have to see any of my messages. Incidentally, you quote Friedrich Nietzsche in your messages. There are Message Boards specifically for Friedrich Nietzsche on IMDb. Nietzsche has nothing to do with being the handsomest actor on "The Twilight Zone". How about taking your Nietzsche quote over to his IMDb Message Boards since you're being so persnickety here? Go liven things up over there. It's been almost one year since someone has left a message on Nietzsche's IMDb Message Boards. LOL! 'Nuff said!
