Arcane references

Even today -- after half a century -- when I watch a Rocky & Bullwinkle episode, I continue to be amazed at the depth of the writing.
When I was 8 in 1959, Rocky and Bullwinkle was must-watch TV for me and all my friends, which we saw weekday afternoons after school from a station in Philadelphia. Of course much of the dialog flew right over our heads, and we only "got it" decades later when re-watching the show.
I wonder if Jay Ward consciously thought of the need to draw in adults as he created his show for kids. No doubt.
Hard to believe today, but back then there was only one TV in the house and adults had to put up with whatever their kids were watching. This show gave the adults something to enjoy, too.
The basic story lines for kids were funny in themselves, but then the writers added in zingers for adults, and many of the 50s-60s current event references will be lost on almost anyone who was born later.
Great show. Still enjoy it.
