Sylvia Field's Mrs. Wilson: one of the best 'motherly' characters ever!

I believe that Sylvia Field's Mrs. Wilson is one of the best 'motherly' characters ever! I realize that she is not technically a mother on this show, but even so, she is still way more of a mother to Dennis than is Mrs. Mitchell.

Gloria Henry's Mrs. Mitchell just stands around the house and, like a mad dictator, angrily barks orders at Dennis. She has no emotional bond with Dennis. Rather than Dennis' mother, she comes across far more like a bossy, random babysitter.

In contrast, Sylvia Field's Mrs. Wilson always treats Dennis well, and gives him tons of love, as if she is his perfect mother.

I think this is both a writing problem and an acting problem. First, the show's basic plot has structural problems because it gives Dennis both "two fathers" and "two mothers," and the Mitchell parents get the short end of the sticks (Kearns' Mr. Wilson is also a much better father to Dennis than is Mr. Mitchell).

Second, Sylvia Field is just too good of an actress; she vastly upstages Gloria Henry without even trying.

I don't see Sylvia Field receiving much acclaim for her truly brilliant work on this show. But she deserves all the acclaim in the world.

Does anyone else understand what I mean in this post?

Sylvia Field is more the grandmother. Gloria Henry is mother

But other than age, what is the difference that distinguishes whether Sylvia Field was Dennis' "mother" or "grandmother?"

IMO there is no difference.

I'm 4yrs late but I loved her character! I moved a lot as a kid and often wanted an elderly neighbor like her.
