Cattle Vs. Sheep?

For those of us who are city dwellers, can someone please explain why there would be a controversy over having sheep graze with or near cattle. From what I can gather, they're both pretty dumb, non-threatening animals that both like to graze in a herd/flock.

The cattlemen felt they were being invaded, and it became a turf war. Also the cattlemen felt that sheep eat plants down closer to the ground and make it more difficult for a field to recover. Here are a couple of links:

Sheep's hooves also stir up the alkali in water, and it is poison to cattle.

Shirley MacClaine said something about polluting the cattle watering holes and something else.
