Title character is essentially a Drag Queen

That's why so many gay men like this film.

Mame is flamboyant, dresses to the hilt (oodles of gold lame and fur and jewels), and is always in control.

And that CIGARETTE HOLDER!!!

Pre-"Cruella Deville" from Disney's "101 Dalmatians."

What gay guy wouldn't LOVE to be her???!!!

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

reply

Gee, ya think?

The book was written by a gay man.

He was bisexual having been married and having a son, but essentially you are right.

You should see Die, Mommie, Die! (2003). Among others, Charles Busch pays a little bit of homage to Auntie Mame.

reply

Hahaha. I was thinking the same thing. Her mannerisms .... She does everything over the top. It's actually very annoying to me but I liked the film.

Russell is certainly a bit over-the-top at times, but nevertheless she's sincere and is effective in her more subdued moments. Apparently it was her input to the stage version that resulted in AUNTIE MAME being toned down into family-style entertainment -the novel is subtitled "An Irreverent Escapade" and is certainly adult entertainment.

"Somewhere along the line the world has lost all of its standards and all of its taste."

I think it was film critic Pauline Kael who started the concept of Mame as a drag queen.

"Forget it, Jake. It's the internet."

reply

I don't know if that's accurate. Mame probably influenced a lot of drag queens but she can't be a drag queen, she's a real woman.

I suspect this is how drag queens, transvestites, and transsexuals see women. The ones who want to be women always take on some exaggerated, over-the-top, pseudo-female persona that does not represent most normal women and has absolutely nothing to do with being a woman.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

reply

Pauline Kael WAS a drag queen. Make that just a drag, period.

reply

Mame is a heterosexual woman with flamboyant personality and style. OP does not seem to know what "drag" and "queen" mean in context.
