I figured her character was either in her 30s or 40s and that is how old she was in real life.

I couldn't believe it either. She was actually the same age as the 'old woman' who is murdered, they mention her age at the trial. Crazy.

She was 13 years older than Tyrone Power yet she was convincing as his wife. Power was only 42-43 yet looked older and Dietrich looked younger than her age due to her plastic surgery and her famous facial lifts.

According to the trivia in this film, both Dietrich and Laughton had a crush on Tyrone and that Dietrich was quite aggressive in her advances.

She looked amazing in this movie. But dont take a look at her hands. Theyve shown her age.
