The limits of a young Robert Wagner

Grew up on RW, dug him immensely on tv in "It Takes a Thief" during its original run, and most of his 60s roles were hip & cool, while being light. Thought he was always a great comedic actor in a Leslie Nielsen kind of way, as "Austin Powers" showed.

So even tho liking him, can't get by the fact that he was a terrible dramatic actor when young, as this movie just adds to the list of flicks he single-handedly ruins...

I've come to realise that, though Robert Wagner came to overshadow Jeffrey Hunter (who was only three years older) in the 20th Century-Fox hierarchy in a move engineered by that studio in 1954, Hunter way outdid Wagner in acting talent, in screen presence, and as a human being, and died at 42 -- The good die young.

The director lamented that he had not gotten Elvis for the role and only ever imagined him in it. I can see him playing the young early scenes but Elvis looked very going in 1957, he looked 17 so how could he play a more mature Jesse?
