Interesting that this film was made by someone under 40.

It looks like something that would have been made by someone who was about Isak's age. My theory is that Bergman knew someone about that age, or maybe it was the actor who played Isak, who filled him in on some of the aging experience and the related thought processes. Not that this is a film only for old people, I just watched it for the first time at 31 and loved it (although I doubt there's anything in here for kids, teens or immature 20s) but I would have thought it would be the brainchild of someone somewhat older than Bergman was at the time.

I'm 13 and I very much appreciated this film.
My favorite Bergman movie, even more so than the seventh seal.

Aside from the fact that Bergman made aging, death, and the search for god the central focuses of his career, it was assuredly helpful to him that the lead role was played by Sjöström, the renowned director/actor and great mentor to Bergman.

I thought it was really great that Bergman decided to focus on old age and self-reflection in this film. It was a very poignant story and Isak seemed like a really sweet man that just had a difficult time expressing his feelings. The film is full of quiet sadness and despair but I like that Bergman really captures the sweet man that he is underneath the exteriors.

It does seem like a late career type of film.
