I didn't care for the male lead

I felt the main male character looked way to old in a kind of perverted way for the young girl character and i felt his acting was very stiff, he delivered his lines like john wayne would but this wasn't supposed to be a john wayne style character. anyway that's just my opinion.

Gary Cooper was one of those who was a movie star more than an actor. I like to joke that in movies, he got payed by the "Yup," every time he uttered that word. It's pretty easy to imitate him, too: just clench your teeth when you talk, and make a slight glottal explosion each time you have a word that starts with a vowel! An actor today that compares (as far as being a star more than a great actor) is Tom Cruise, who basically plays himself in each movie, and, despite some things, remains a huge draw. Cooper drew them in to the box office with his likability and natural charisma. Check out his brief performance in the silent film "Wings," for a study in charisma! That made a star out of him the same way Brad Pitt's small role in "Thelma And Louise" launched his career. Anyway, I think Mr. Copper worked very well in this movie. With his conveyance of a nonchalant attitude and romantic bent (with The Gypsies, etc.), I can easily believe that women would fall for him as they did in the movie.

I thought they were perfect for the film--and in real life, Cooper was 56 and Hepburn 28 at the time, which is reasonable. But it matches the storyline and plot structure. A fine film by Wilder with great performances by the two leads IMHO.
