I never really liked Rashomon, hah i never got what was so GREAT about it...and i luv kurosawa.

reply

other than inventing the whole "same story told from multiple points of view" genre, you mean?

reply

to be honest i don't think that's a great reason for liking it. that "genre" (more of a plot structure than a genre, but whatever) isn't that great anyway. Influential, sure. But I agree, while Rashomon was good, it's not high up on my Kurosawa list.

well i've finally got around to seeing MOST of his films. i'll list the ones I've seen, listed in order of rank.

1. Dersu Uzala - though lesser known, I've yet to hear one bad remark about it.
2. Rashomon
3. Ran
4. Yojimbo
5. Hidden Fortress

the following five could be interchangeable and for the most part aren't really in ranked order.
6. High and Low
7. Lower Depths
8. Sanjuro
9. Throne of Blood
10. Ikiru - I've seen too many better made films expressing this same theme.

simply was not impressed by these last two - yes i know Seven Samurai should be way higher. <shrug>
11. Seven Samurai
12. Red Beard

Tarantino movies are like arcade style video games.

Although these are all WONDERFUL films, I wish you would also consider two of Kurasawa's "lesser" films that are not often talked about or shown on t.v.--Shubun (Scandal) and Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru (The Bad Sleep Well). Both are set in present-day Japan and, as such, cannot rely on costuming and locale, but on solid acting, writing and direction.

reply

I have not seen many but here is the list of the ones I have seen.

1) RAN
2) Yojimbo
3) Seven Samuari
4) Sanjuro
5) Rhapsody in August
6) Hidden Fortess
