Would have been common a Principal to teach classes in either grades 1-8 elementary school or at Junior High School grades 7-9 in 8th grade?

My family moved a lot. In the 1950s and 1960s I went to ten different public schools. I never knew of a principal who also taught classes. That's not to say it never happened--it probably did.
