This one doesn't have the same star power as some of Curtiz's other films. I imagine it would be a stronger film with better or more experienced actors in it.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. The Times wrote, "It is a very drab hour and a half, in the company of actors who have not yet established their reputations and are unlikely to achieve them as a result of this movie. The story combines a rather unsavory triangle with a jewel robbery and the director Mr. Curtiz has achieved a certain amount of suspense but little else."[7]

reply

Right. Ratings and reviews on imdb and letterboxd are mixed too.

I wonder if this is the first movie to reference "playing footsie". I don't recall hearing that phrase in many older movies.

reply

i was thinking the same thing. i thought it was a more modern term

The story and the performances are not up to what I would expect from Curtiz's films. I liked the look of the film, but it just wasn't all that interesting. This is Curtiz's weakest film out of what I have seen and feels longer than it is. 6/10 is my rating.

sometimes there's a reason some movies are forgotten. elaine stritch said this was her worst movie.
