An Anachronism

When the protagonists meet the command of General Miles, Indian Commissioner Ward tells Jim Read he is no longer a scout for Miles and Ward is transferring him to what sounded like Fort Crook, Nebraska.

As Indian Commissioner Ward had no authority over civilian employees of the War Department.

And General Miles couldn't have ordered Read transferred to Fort Crook, Nebraska, either.

Comanche takes place in Texas, and at that time Texas was an entirely different command from the one which included Nebraska.

in 1875, the fictional date of Comanche, Texas and the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) were part of the Military Department of Texas. Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico were part of the Department of the Missouri (which means the Missouri River), Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Montana were part of the Department of Dakota, and Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, eastern Idaho and Utah were part of the Department of the Platte.

And those departments were part of the Military Division of the Missouri, which was commanded by General Philip Sheridan. Only Sheridan and his staff had authority to transfer someone from Texas to Nebraska.

And what is an anachronism is that Fort Crook, Nebraska, now part of Offurt Air Force Base, was not established until 1890, 15 years after the fictional date of Comanche.
