Double Take

After watching The Brave One (1956), it's obvious that screenwriter Dalton Trumbo copied the main elements of Paul Gallico's story Never Take No For An Answer (1951) and changed the setting and a few details.

Never Take No For An Answer: A little Italian boy has a pet donkey which he loves very much. When the donkey becomes ill and the vet cannot make him well again, the boy is refused permission by priests to allow him to take the donkey into the shrine of St Francis of Assisi where he is convinced he will be made well again. So he decides to take the matter to the very top, the Holy Father himself, the Pope in Rome. When he gets to Rome, no one will let him in to see the Pope. He is even stopped from getting into the Vatican by riding through on the back of a car. But after much subterfuge, he eventually does get to see the Pope about his donkey.

The Brave One: A little Mexican boy has a pet bull which he has raised from being a calf and which he loves very much. When the bull is sold and taken away to be killed in the bull ring, the boy gets no help from adults to help him save his pet from death. So he decides to take the matter to the very top, the President of Mexico himself in Mexico City. When he gets to Mexico City, no one will let him in to see the President. He is even stopped from getting into the presidential palace by riding through on the back of a car. But after much subterfuge, he eventually does get to see the President about his bull.

The difference is that The Brave One is based upon a true story. No need to make anything up.

Yes, the story about that bull supposedly took place in Mexico around the 1930s. And it was not just Dalton Trumbo who used it as an idea for THE BRAVE ONE, but KING KONG animator Willis O'Brien, also took that true scenario and wanted to produce a fantasy version of it, EMILIO AND HIS MAGIC BULL. Unfortunately, O'Brien never got around to doing it. Something was made out of that idea around the 1970s, but that film went into obscurity.

The Brave One was a great film. I watched it last night. It had a pretty strong message about the cruelty of bull fighting. Good for Dalton Trumbo!
