Around the World in 80 Days vs. Giant

I personally am amazed that 80 days got the award, Giant IMHO is a much better flim.
Who do you think should win? Thanks for your help. I'll tally the votes

Giant: /
ATW80D:

out of fairness I'm doing this on the Giant board too.

Deep throat...he's on deep backround, so we call him deep throat.

Giant is much better. Around the World reminded me of one of those drawn out Saturday Night Live sketches (from their lousy years) that when its over, you wonder if anyone actually thought it was good.

There were so many better movies of 1956 including Baby Doll, The Wrong Man, There's Always Tomorrow, The Harder They Fall & The Searchers.... Even ones I just thought were OK were still much better - Bus Stop, Moby Dick & The Man Who Knew Too Much

I've seen both movies many times and they are both BRILLIANT! But my vote goes to Around the world in 80 days.

James Dean's acting in Giant is amazing, but the second half of Giant is a little slow and not at all as interesting as the first half. Had Giant been as good all the way to the end it would have won but it's not.

Around the world in 80 days however is just as good all the way through. It's a very long movie but you never get tired or bored and it's funny and exciting all the way through. Plus, Around the world in 80 days is entertaining for adults and kids alike. I've loved it since I was about 7 which is now 30 years ago. Films like this aren't made anymore. Now adventure films are too violent and you rarely find a modern film with this kind of "gleam in the eye."

Concerning Oscars, I don't care one bit. The Academy Awards is Hollywood's own private lick each others' butts event and has not much to do with how good a movie is.

And by the way... in the end it's only a matter of taste.

No, thank you.

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

No - Giant was good, and despite some of the caricatures in ATWI8D, pretty much every scene in Texas was so over the top it was like a minstrel show for Texans. Ridiculous in every way. If James Dean wasn't in it I would consider Giant mediocre.

As a movie I just liked ATWI8D better.

We have the benefit of hindsight when we compare classic films. Time and tastes change. No offense, but I've always thought it ridiculous to go back 50-60 years and say who should have won an Oscar. I think people should judge movies by how they were seen back then (by reading up on that time, watching interviews, etc.). Otherwise you're projecting your modern views, tastes, etc back on that time.
