Favourite storyline?

Just wondering what people's favourite storyline was from the series. Unfortunately I got into it quite late, so I'm not familiar with some of the stories.

For my part I would have to say that my favourite was the storyline focuaing on Luke and Noah, and later on Dr. Reid Oliver.

reply

There were so many...but none written by the hack that destroyed ATWT its last few years.

I have three all time favorites:

1. Bob/Kim/Susan triangle.

2. Doug Cummings story.

3. Lisa's misguided revenge on John and then he getting revenge on her.

reply

My favorite is fairly old:

The Lisa/Grant Coleman/Joyce Coleman triangle. I loved Joyce Coleman. She was a match for Lisa.

I also liked the storyline about Lily's biological parents. It had a lot of twists and used a lot of interesting characters.

After that, anything involving Lucinda would rank. She was my favorite character. I really liked her when she had the lawyer, Ambrose, and her secretary as partners in her schemes.

I started watching when Steve and Betsy were courting. So I loved the Steve Craig Betsy triangle. I also loved when Meg Ryan left the show and 2 months for Steve to find out Betsy was still alive... one of the last episodes when Luke found out that Reid was hit by a train.. over the top!!!

reply

Ditto for me.

Instead of Prince, Bon Jovi, or Cyndi Lauper posters in my room, it was Steve and Betsy from Soap Digest. It was during summer after my sophomore year in high school when Betsy was "killed" and Meg Ryan left the show. I remember friends and classmates with whom I watched the show say, "Well, you won't see her anymore." I said, "Wanna bet?"

Of course, we know what happened a few years later with Innerspace, DOA, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and so on....

The Shannon O'Hara/Duncan McKechnie storyline was epic. I really liked that.

My favorite character in the last twenty five years was Kirk Anderson. I liked the storylines that revolved around him. He could be so despicable, yet people would trust him yet again and he'd do the same thing. I really hoped they would have brought him and Samantha Markham back from the death/disappearance before the show ended, but alas, they didn't.

I also liked the Craig and Sierra storyline. I always saw them as the love of each other's lives. I think they should have gotten them back together in the end instead of implying Craig would rehook up with Rosanna Cabot.

reply

I loved Craig and Sierra (the origninal ) After that the Craig's and Sierra's had no chemistry.

Angel Lange marrying Holden so he could "protect" her from her father was intense. Angel's dad, Henry, repeated molested her to the point of getting her pregnant. She completely lost touch with reality and did anyhting to stay with Holden.

Royce Keller murdering his sister, Neal Alcott. Later discovered he had multiple personalities.

Connor Jamison finding out she was related to Lucinda Walsh and attempting to tske over Worldwide from her along with her brother Evan.

reply

I didn't really care for the Royce Keller storyline. I also didn't like the Carolyn Crawford murder storyline. There was some very good writing in from the mid 80's through the early 90's. Both of these plots took place during that period but just didn't seem to match the quality of the other ones.

I vaguely remember that Samantha Markham was introduced during the Royce Keller storyline. She was a great addition to the show when the original actress played her. I wasn't too impressed with the replacement. I guess that I'll give some credit to this storyline as it brought Samantha onto the show.

The original actress playing Samantha continues to appear in national commercials. It is funny that, more than 15 years later, I immediately think, "There is Samantha! She still looks good." whenever I see one of them.

reply

Duncan & Shannon storyline was the best.

reply

I loved the Luke and Noah story but they ruined it the last 6 months of the show by bringing in that useless Reid....it just did not ring true.

reply

I"m with you on the Royce Keller thing. Didn't do anything for me. I just started watching the show at the beginning of Carolyn Crawford story. It was kinda eery the way it was done, and lots of twists and turns that led to nowhere, but it also got me hooked on the show. I feel like I started just a little too late, barely missing all the tonyo Reyes stuff and James Stenbeck stories, Doug Cummings and all that stuff. But the show was still awesome at that point.

Susan/KIm/Dan storyline where Kim lost her memory and went back to John Dixon. Dan fell in love with a nurse at the hospital, not Susan. Kim regained her memory, but wouldn't tell Dan, believing he was happy. Susan blew up the wedding by telling Dan that Kim remembered. Priceless. Dan and Kim married.

Buffy:...what's your damage?

1) Chris and Nancy Hughes' 50th wedding anniversay - it was acutally the show's 30th anniversary, but we got to see Chris one last time before he died. The toasts given by Penny, Don, and Bob were so heartbreaking. And then Ellen & Betsy present the photo album and David Stewart calls. Plus, Grant, Susan, Annie, Dee, and Rick Ryan come back.

2) Lisa/Grant/Joyce/Don - such a great storyline that finally forced a lot of viewers to start rooting for Lisa because Joyce was so horrible

3) Kim's Stalker - I never saw it coming. the reveal of who her stalker was came as a complete shock.

4) Lisa sues John for malpractice - one of the last great storylines featuring the vets. It split the Hughes family right down the middle with Bob, Tom, and Barbara supporting Lisa while Kim, Andy, and Margo pulled for John. So many twists and turns. And I loved how it also pulled characters like Nancy, Ellen, Lucinda, Lily, and Damian into it.

5) Betsy's baby - Betsy was married to Craig and was pregnant. But her grandfather David knew it couldn't be Craig's because his accident had made him sterile. Ellen wanted to tell Betsy that her baby was Steve's but David struggled with his oath as a doctor.

You claim to be a long-time fan? Ha, ha. Connor and Evan successfully took over Lucinda's WALSH ENTERPRISES. At that point, Lucinda started Worldwide. Connor and Evan had no interest in Worldwide. They successfully took over WALSH ENTERPRISES since it belonged to their grandfather originally.

All great stories!

I vividly remember as a child seeing Kim caught in that tornado--when she and Dan were apart. The sound of wind chimes always reminds me of that.

reply

The best part was later when John romanced Lisa and then publically dumped her. At the altar, I think.

Payback is a bitch.

I think it was their engagement party. I just remember there were these multi-tv screens - sort of like the Brady Bunch intro - and John had taped his message which Lucinda played - dumping Lisa in front of most of the town.

There are so many good storylines. I really miss this show!

I enjoyed reading everyone's comments. My top 25 storylines (in no particular order) are:

1. Susan's addiction to pain killers and her affair with Bob - Susan/Bob/Kim triangle

2. John Dixon learns he has an adult son, Duke Kramer, from a long-ago affair with Rosemary Kramer

3. May/December romance and marriage of (older) Lyla Montgomery and (younger) Casey Peretti

4. Connor Walsh and Evan Walsh worm their way into Lucinda's good graces in their plot to take over Lucinda's company, Walsh Enterprises, which belonged to their grandfather

5. Andy's alcoholism and his affair with Julie Wendall and later his marriage to Courtney Baxter

6. Marriage and divorce of Lucinda Walsh and John Dixon

7. Casey Peretti euthanasia storyline; Casey, who is in an irreversible coma due to encephalitis and knew he would die, had asked step-daughter Margo to pull the plug because he did not want machines to keep him alive in a vegetative state; the aftermath between Margo and Lyla

8. Iva Snyder is revealed to be Lily's biological mother in 1987 (she was raped by her cousin, Josh Snyder/aka Rod Landry; Iva herself was adopted by Emma and her husband so Holden and Lily are not blood-related); years later in 2000 it is revealed that Iva actually gave birth to twin girls, Lily and Rose D'Angelo

9. Margo's rape and possible HIV infection

10. 50th wedding anniversary of Nancy and Chris Hughes

11. Romance of Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer

12. Lucinda learns that she has half-siblings, Neal Alcott (the wonderful Mary Kay Adams), Royce Keller and Samantha Markham. Loved the flashbacks when Elizabeth Hubbard portrayed their awful mother, Gloria; this storyline gave us so much insight into Lucinda's character

13. Kim and Bob learn that their presumed-dead daughter from their love affair years ago is actually alive and was adopted by the Fullertons who named her Sabrina and when they travel to Italy to find her

14. Romance of Barbara Ryan and Henry Coleman, who turns out to be James Stenbeck's biological son and Paul Ryan's half-brother

15. Molly Conlan, Holden's first girlfriend with whom he has a daughter, comes to town and tries to break up Holden and Lily

16. Romance and marriage of Will Munson and Gwen Norbeck

17. James Stenbeck returning from the dead for the first time in 1986 in Duncan McKechnie's castle and Barbara's reaction ("Hello, Barbara")

18. Lisa suing John for malpractice over her husband Eduardo Grimaldi's death; romance of Lisa and John, and then John dumping her via a televised recording at their engagement party and humiliating her in front of the whole town in order to get revenge against Lisa

19. Angel Lange incest storyline

20. Switzerland Spa storyline in which Barbara has James Stenbeck kidnap Emily, Rose and Carly who are then held hostage in the spa and experimented on (Rose and Carly are rapidly aged and then later returned to normal once back in Oakdale); this was not the typical type of storyline for ATWT and was rather sci-fi but it worked and I enjoyed it; I read that this storyline was dreamed up as a way to keep the three actresses (Kelley Menighan Hensley, Martha Byrne and Maura West), who were all pregnant in real life at that time, covered up in lots of robes and towels so as to conceal their condition

21. Romance and marriage of Susan Stewart and Larry McDermott and Susan's late in life pregnancy (She gives birth to Alison at Fashions Boutique!)

22. Romance of Connor Walsh and Linc Lafferty and Marcy Breen scheming to break them up (Hannah Lafferty, Linc's mother, also doesn't help matters much since she likes Marcy better than Connor)

23. Tad Channing murder mystery

24. Runaway Rosanna (first actress Yvonne Perry) who has been living at the Snyder farm is revealed some time later to be Rosanna Cabot, daughter of Alexander Cabot who owns Cabot Motors and heiress to the Cabot fortune

25. Laura Simmons, who works for Bob and Kim as Christopher Hughes' babysitter, turns out to be psychologically imbalanced and tries to make trouble for Bob and Kim and Tom and Margo; singer Beau Farrell, who seems to be stalking Laura the way the storyline is written at first, is revealed to be her brother

The whole "triangle" of BARBARA RYAN, JAMES STENBECK and GUNNAR STENBECK. God Bless the brilliant Anthony Herrera: Only HE could tell his estranged wife that he was "setting her free".... except that it was in a BULL RING, and she was wearing a BRIGHT RED DRESS! As I said before...God Bless him...

The adventures of Margo and Tom with "Mr. Big". It was a fun filled, energetic romp...filled with clues, mysteries, riddles and cliffhangers galore. It was also masterminded by the wonderful "little person", Brent Collins.

John Dixon pretending to be blind, in order to hold onto his wife, Dee. It was a grand story, but it was also enjoyable because the two actors had fallen in love...and it SHOWED.

The bittersweet ending to the love affair of Kim and Dan Stewart.

The sensitively handled story of widowed Nancy Hughes and her budding relationship with Dan McCloskey. It had two beautifully handled stories: The discomfort of adults at the remarriage of a parent. (Don Hastings was great) Helen Wagner also had a subplot, about dealing with a spouse's ALZHEIMER'S.

Last, but never least: The introduction to the general public of the talented and GORGEOUS young Julianne Moore.

"I do hope he won't upset Henry.."

This was the best storyline EVER. It was so bad and cheesy, but by God did it keep me hooked for some reason. I also really loved the character of Rose. Martha Byrne was hilarious in this role. And Maura West is terrific as well.

This was ATWT at its best hands down.

Hands down for me is the Iva-Lily-Lucinda storyline. That was a powerhouse monster with all parties involved.

Second would have to be baby Aaron Snyder's parentage, pinnacled when Julie returned at Holden and Lily's wedding.

An amazing highlight was Holden and Caleb fighting at the barn and Angel and Mrs. Snyder trying to break them up and doused them with a bucket of water. I was rolling.

When Dr John Dixon (L.Bragmann) was at the top of his powers he was a forceful villain like I don't think i've ever seen in Daytime.
