EVELYN KEYES WAS GREAT

It's sad that with all the fuss over MM, nobody seems to have noticed the hilarious performance of Evelyn Keyes as Helen. I believe her deadpan approach was the highlight of the movie (along with Doro Merande's scene-stealing bits as the waitress).
I particularly love the scene with Sonny Tufts on the hayride and the climactic scene where she breaks into their apartment and "shoots" her husband.
Ms. Keyes was a far better comedienne than she was given credit for.

Yes, she was great. And a belated R.I.P.

A much younger Evelyn Keyes was also great as Scarlett O'Hara's sister Suellen in "Gone With The Wind".

A VERY late reply, I know--but the character of Suellen O'Hara, as written in the movie, was a one-dimensional, drama-queen bitch.
She had none of the complexities of the novel's Suellen, who had plotted to get her father drunk enough to sign the Iron Clad Oath and receive $150,000 from the Yankee government.
I always pitied the fact that her scheme fell through; I believe that if she had succeeded, Will or Melanie would have written to Scarlett in Atlanta, who would then have made a beeline to Tara and taken over the use of that money (while also embracing the sister she had always despised).

I'm a huge fan of the great Evelyn Keyes, and it was a nice surprise to see her in this funny comedy. Wish she would have been given a longer screen time, though, since she was perfect in every single scene she took part in. Certainly, a very versatile actress, terrific in both drama and comedy.

Yep, she nailed it. I recently became a fan of hers when I saw Johnny O'Clock. Now I want to see all her films.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

reply

Haven't seen Johnny O'Clock yet, but I agree that she was wonderful. Wish I could see her complete filmography.

Evelyn Keyes is great and I usually enjoy the movies she's in but her appearance in this movie wasn't enough. I did not like it at all.

I find Marilyn Monroe's manner of speaking very annoying. Obviously, I had heard it before but, for some reason, probably because this movie was a snooze-fest (I literally did fall asleep in the middle of it), I was especially turned off by that cutesy, breathy, air-head tone. I suppose men are charmed by that type of persona; the dumb, curvy, blonde but since I'm not a man and not the target audience for this movie, it does nothing for me.

Yes, Keyes was terrific, especially in the fantasy scene where she blows the locks off the door and comes after Ewell with a revolver.
