Was the real Lola Montes a household name in 1955?

This movie is based on a real person who went by the same name. I had not heard of Lola Montes until I checked this movie out from the library.

Was Lola Montes a household name back in 1955 when this was released? She died in 1861, so she had been dead 94 years when this came out. I have never heard of her, but people living 60 ears ago might have. If this was someone well known back then it would make sense for a movie to come out about her, but its a lot more strange if she was just as obscure back then as she is today.

Also, did she really do anything of merit to warrant being famous? Her only claim to fame seems to be the fact that she slept around a lot with famous guys in Europe, including a King who gave her a small amount of political influence. That kind of seems like the 1800's equivalent of Kim Kardashian to me.

Reminds me of Kamala Harris and Willie Brown. She's pretty famous now.
