I had a very similar experience with this movie. I watched it when I was probably 5 or 6 and I was terrified of this movie for years. The part where Boxer the horse gets taken away to the glue factory made me cry. I think if I saw it again today it would still make me cry.

There's also a scene in which Napoleon's dogs brutally kill a cat.

And what about the good men?! Pascal, or Claudandus or Felidae or whatever you're called!

reply

WHAT?!?
thats so sad...

I actually rented this movie again a year ago, and also read the book.
I am now 17 and I appriciate this movie MUCH more. It really depicts the rise of communism well!

I agree, but compared to whats done against realistic looking cats in bad horror films, I think I could let this slide. I think I get more upset when it sounds like a cat is in pain over a long time, like those horror films. You can't tell your pets it's not real, it's a movie.

You should watch Watership Down. Now that's a scary grotesque cartoon movie... and emphasis on the 'cartoon' part.

Very much agreed. I didnt see it as a child, but my 10 year old cusion got scared when Napolean morphed into Mr Jones (near the end), that kind of freaked me out to. I regret it because I had to watch it for school and my cusion walked into the room when I was watching it.

I watched this the summer before 5th grade and I found it to be pretty freaky. However, it didn't give me nightmares because it had a happy ending. So when it came time to write our animal story book reports in school, I immediately thought about this film. I soon found out that this story was more depressing than I thought.

I am sorry your parents didn't know. I can see that happening to anyone.

Also the video store probably had it in the wrong section. In my experience, many video clerks knew little about movies.

Yeah, despite being a cartoon, this film is not really for small, very young kids.

It's ultimately an adult satirical fable about Communism and totalitarianism. But it is good for junior high school children and older to watch (and it's also good to read the original novel as well).
