The only REAL Mickey Mouse Club

When I think of The Mickey Mouse Club, This is the only version that exists in my mind. I hate it when people group all incarnations of the club into the same category, People will be like "Oh, You like The Mickey Mouse Club, Wasn't Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera on that show?" and I'm like "No, The REAL Mickey Mouse Club! not that MMC Bullsh*t".

"The Mickey Mouse Club", "The New Mickey Mouse Club", & "MMC" are 3 different shows, and the original is the only TRUE version of the club.

Christopher Robin 1955,

Just wanted to correct you on what you previous wrote above:

Yes it was 3 different shows spanding 3 different decades. However, during the 1990's, the show was called "The Mickey Mouse Club". It was on for 7 seasons (1989-1994 I believe). Anyways, the named was only changed to "MMC" during season 7. Therefore it was not called "MMC" during the entire 7 seasons.

I also wanted to add:

The 1950's cast were indeed the ORIGINAL mouseketeers and will always be credited for starting the popularity of the Mouse Club. But as for your statement saying they were the only "True Version" of the club, what exactly does that mean? There is no need to get super touchy and make mouseketeer fans of later decades feel like their show was a piece of crap.

reply

Oh no, I don't mean that the other ones are crap, It's just that to me the original is the only one I see as "The Mickey Mouse Club" the others are just revivals or spinoffs which are each good in their own little way. It's just irritating sometimes that "The MMC" is the version that gets the most recognition by the general public. Whenever I mention I'm a fan of the Mickey Mouse Club I always get crap like "Oh, Wasn't Britney Spears and Chistina Aguilera on that show?" and I'll be like "HELL NO, I'm talking about the original." I realise the other 2 shows have their fans though and I respect that, I guess I just felt like stating my own opinion. By the way I'm 19 so I'm definately not part of the original shows generation but I am a HUGE fan of Vintage Disney Programming and this show along with "Zorro" are 2 of my all time favorites.

I think it's great that you enjoy such classic television, Christopher Robin 1955. At your age, it's nice to hear you enjoy vintage Disney shows that were before your time (they are a hell of a lot better than what Disney turns out these days, don't you agree? and like you said, better than the Britney-Justin-Christina Mickey Mouse Club). I used to love watching those older Disney shows myself on Vault Disney until the Disney Channel stopped running it. I'm 22 so these Disney shows are before my time as well, but they're still better than a lot of current tv. Disney is a tradition that goes back a long way in both movies and television and for me the best Disney movies and shows were the ones I grew up watching on the Disney Channel when I was a kid (Zorro...The Mickey Mouse Club...Alice In Wonderland...Lady and The Tramp...Peter Pan...Pinocchio...Dumbo). Animated Disney movies today do absolutely nothing for me whatsoever. I don't know if you feel the same way, but there's something about Disney's past that is interesting and fascinating to watch (so many childhood memories), so again it's great to see somebody else enjoys the classic nostalgic Disney and not the Disney of today, which pales in comparison. I kind of rambled a little bit, but I hope you enjoy my response if you get a chance to read it at all.

I have always loved Classic Television and Movies since I was very young, Especially Disney and it's so sad to see most of it being forgotten. I used to also watch Classic Movies on AMC back when they showed CLASSICS, Now the only channel like that anymore is TMC and even they show more modern films now. The Disney Channel is HORRIBLE now, I abselutely LOVE Disney but there channel shows some of the dumbest shows I have ever seen. My 9 year old Sister watches it all the time and I can't believe the crap they show. it seems the only way for me to see any vintage Disney anymore is to keep buying those expensive Walt Disney Treasure DVD Tins they put out. And the Platinum Edition DVDs. And while I do enjoy some modern Animation, Nothing today compares to Disney classics. I wish Disney would be smart enough to make Vault Disney a Separate Channel, I know people would watch it. I did enjoy your response and I too tend to ramble when I post, I'm glad to see somebody else has such good taste.

I'm glad you brought up AMC. I very rarely see "classics" on that channel anymore. I don't know how they can call movies that are less than five or ten years old classics. And yes I too would watch a Vault Disney Channel if ever one was created. Hopefully in the future there'll be one. Speaking of Disney, I've become obsessed with the Disney Sing-Along Songs tapes and DVDs. I have three on dvd and five on video. There are so many great songs in Disney movies and since I don't own that many Disney movies, it is nice to be able to see all of the best songs together in one place. The Sing-Along Songs were something I remembered loving from my childhood.

Yes,AMC has gone down the tubes. They still do have some old stuff on there but they cut them up by adding too many commercials.Do you get Turner Classic movies? That channel totally rocks for old movies. And halmark channel shows old Disney live action classics.Tmorrow on hallmark at 10 am racific time they are showing Old yeller

This may show my age Christopher, but in 1955, I was watching The Original Mickey Mouse Club in b/w on our new Dumont television. It's great to see the younger generation can spot great programming, because there sure is a lot of junk on today. I've seen some of the newer shows of MMC and though they have their own fans, there is nothing in my mind that can compare to the original. I bet there wasn't a teenage boy in America who was not in love with Annette the first time they saw her. I myself loved Karen because she was closer to my age, then it was Doreen, oh to be young again. Just the other day, someone asked me "What time is it"? And without thinking, I answered "It's Howdy Doody Time", they thought I was nuts, but that happens to us old folks, it's called a childhood flashback. Boy am I dating myself, hope you guys and gals get the pun, since you may not know who Howdy Doody was, along with Buffalo Bob and Clarabell. But the Mickey Mouse Club was always my favorite because of the different shows for each day and of course the mouseketeers. I always had a battle with my older brother who wanted to watch another show but mom let me watch Mickey, because it was so good and "Mother Knows Best" or am I confusing that with another program. Hope you other fans don't mind me sticking my two cents in, maybe with todays economy, I'd have to say fifty dollars. As someone with pointed ears always said, "Live Long and Prosper".

I totally agree with you, Christopher Robin. I'm 17 and even I know that the MMC is Annette, Cubby, and Bobby.

Idiots are fun. No wonder every village wants one.

im 41. i watched the original MMC in the 1970s (reruns, of course). you could buy mouse ears at k-mart (which was the Target of that era). as kids we loved it.

fast forward to this century-- i only learned of the most recent MMC a few years ago, when someone mentioned that Britney Spears started on that show. well there you go-- my image of it is already tainted. i cant imagine it being anything else but creampuff songs and some lame dance routines.

at least the old show had them be KIDS, as corny as it may seem to adults. i imagine the 80s/90s version to be a dance repertoire for pop sluts in training.

reply

I was a fan of the 1990's Mickey Mouse Club. During the 90's, the 50's Mickey Mouse Club used ot be on syndication on the Disney channel. I use to watch that too and it was a real treat to see the similarities of the show's format 40 year later (singing, dancing, and acting).

When Britney and Christina was on the show, their dance routines and acting skits were corny and age appropiate (you could watch some of the acting skits and dance routines on youtube.com). How they turned out later in their careers is a totally different story. Therefore, they were not sluts while on the show. They were just innocent 12 year old girls. No one is the same when they transition from teenager to adulthood. People change, sometimes for the better or worse unfortunately.

reply

I totally agree with you. Little one-hit-wonder spears can't hold a matchstick to REAL singers.

I thought the 90's version was nice too, but that was because some of my childhood was spent in the 90's. But I think the 50's and 70's version was nice also, so I respect the older versions also.

I vaguely recall the 70's version. I remember when the 50's members made a guest appearance. Facts Of Life Lisa W. was a member of the show. I have only seen clips of the 90's version. I guess every show appeals to whatever generation it catered too. I recall as a tiny one liking the original ZOOM back in the early 70's, but thought the 90's version was OK too.

I only think of the original when I hear the name, too. But then I'm 54 and people expect it of me. Glad to hear lots of people still know about the original show. It gives me hope.

I came here because I'm trying to find a serial that I think may have aired on that original show. It was about a group of kids who built their own town. I think at the end of the series a dam or something was built that flooded their town. Does anyone remember that one? I think it was called Ten Town, but that was so long ago I could be wrong.

I completely agree with you. The "remakes" are horrible.

Agreed. I was born in 1950, so I saw the original series. I haven't seen more recent versions, but I have a feeling that the original is still the classic best version. They had some great live-action segments, e.g.:
- Spin and Marty (three serials, starring Tim Considine and David Stollery in the title roles)

- The Hardy Boys (two serials, starring Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk)

- Corky and White Shadow, starring Darlene Gillespie

- Walt Disney Presents: Annette, starring Annette Funicello

- Adventure in Dairyland, featuring Funicello and Sammy Ogg, and introducing Kevin Corcoran as Moochie

- Jiminy Cricket educational serials (four Animated serials educating kids on various topics)

- The Adventures of Clint and Mac (starring Neil Wolfe as Clint Rogers and Jonathan Bailey as Alastair "Mac" MacIntosh)

- Boys of the Western Sea (English-language-dubbed Danish film broken into nine ten-minute segments)

And each different weekday had its own special theme:
- Monday – Fun with Music
- Tuesday – Guest Star
- Wednesday – Anything Can Happen
- Thursday – Circus
- Friday – Talent Round-up

As I said, I never watched any later versions, so I don't know if they followed a similar format or were completely different. But I really liked the original. I had the mouse ears; and when Davy Crockett aired I got the fringed buckskin outfit with the coonskin cap. Ahhh, sweet memories.

Jimmy, the Big Mouseketeer: See you real soon

Mouseketeer chorus: K-E-Y

Jimmy, the Big Mouseketeer: Why? Because we LIKE you!

Mouseketeer chorus: M-O-U-S-EEEE

They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
