Piano music

In almost every episode, the sound of piano music can be heard. It is the same tune over and over again. It is heard mostly in the street near a saloon. Can anyone tell me the name of the song or tune?

reply

I'm pretty sure it's "Freebird".

reply

It is not Freebird. Thanks for trying.

The jukebox in the Longbranch had 2 records... 4 songs.

1) That Old Mare Aint What She Used To Be

2) Clementine

3) She'll be coming round the Mountain when She comes

4) Camptown Races

Freebird, albeit a great song, was from Star Trek.

The song I hear the most is by far "When The Work's All Done This Fall".

Here's Marty Robbins' version:

It's a bit anachronistic, since the song was first published in 1893...but man those classic westerns sure loved it, I hear it *constantly*.

Ben, my guitar and I agree with you!

Season 9, ep 24 Fathers Love
When the Saints go Marching In played on a banjo.

Looks like a classic Gretsch! Cool! I'm a Strat man myself...

My grandfather loved that song though...I have so many memories of him sitting on a lawn chair singing it. When I eventually learned to play (age 13 or so) it was great to accompany him on the song.

reply

Cheers, Ben. How long have you been playing? I love all guitars. Fenders are sweet. They are designed especially for the comfort of the player. Tuning is a piece of cake cause all the machine heads are on the same side. I love the cut on a Strat or Squire.

My guitar (the one you see on my icon) is an Ibanez Artcore AF75 hollowbody. You are absolutely right, it looks like a Gretsch because it has the same shape. I have 7 other guitars of which one is a Gretsch Electromatic single pick up hard body electric guitar, but the Ibanez is the one I reach for when ever I can.

Hack Prine, Season 1, Ep 26

Correct me if I am wrong, but 12 minutes into the show, Kitty descends the stairs of the Long Branch, sits with Matt and talks about a dress she had delivered from St Louis... in the background, we hear the piano play Love Me Tender...?

:P

Interesting in that we always heard the piano music but seldom ever saw the pianist except for one episode I recall where a new pianist was hired and the piano was off to the left side as you entered but every other time it would always be heard but never seen. Perhaps there is another episode or so where it was featured or shown that I don't remember.

reply

I'm on season 11 and the closest thing I ever saw to piano (or pianist) was a guitar on My Father's Guitar ep 21.

Should we assume it was a Player Piano? Those tempos and the mechanical delivery makes me figure they just put in a roll, wound it up and let it go. But I don't know when player pianos were introduced and what would power them.
btw, as a complete aside there is a MUSIC movie called Whiplash about a jazz drummer.
If you ever have the inclination to see the movie and go to the IMDB comments, it's pretty funny.

I'm not a woman much less Deanna Durbin, but the old-time glam-shot appeals to me.

"Love Me Tender" = "Aura Lee" It dates from the Civil War.

reply

The melody used for "Love Me Tender" is originally from an 1861 song called "Aura Lea" (sometimes spelled "Lee"), so it's perfectly plausible it would have been heard at the Long Branch. New lyrics were written to the old melody in 1956 for the Elvis song.
