In the 1930's or 1940's what would had made the ants big? I would suspect they would have been the result of mad scientist experimenting with some gland secretions.

Had this film been made in the seventies it would have been chemical pollution!

Had this been made in "No Nukes" eighties it would be radiation again but this time not from an atomic test but leaked from a nuclear power plant

Had this film been made today it have something to do with global warming.

I agree on all counts. In the '30s it would have been the result of some unhinged scientist, probably played by Lugosi or Karloff.

Fourteen years after the OP (2024), it would indeed be "global warming", except in the absence of any significant warming the hysterics have changed the name to "climate change", in order to cover anything that might happen. It would also most likely be blamed on Trump.
