City Side Walks

Like other who have posted on this page, Target Earth creeped me out when I was a boy. Growing up on Los Angeles and seeing the empty streets I was familiar with made it so.

Years later, my brother worked the security gate at KCET Channel 28 studios in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard, formerly Monogram Studios, and on a visit I recogized some of the buildings used in this title and others.

If you get to go to the lot and take the tour, keep Target Earth in mind and it will all come back to you.

Those empty streets were pretty creepy, weren't they? And then when Nora bumps into Frank after the only other person that she came across was that dead woman...........well, I can see where that would freak her out. And it did.

This title is getting a lot of gas for being a cheap movie (the robot gets the treatment, but I think it is kind of spiffy and effective and maybe it is just my nostalgic view of it, but I think it is a nifty film. Anyway, I can only recall it as such since I haven't seen it since those days gone by.

I've seen other empty street thrillers The Last Woman on Earth (1960),Omega Man (1971), I Am Legend (2007), The Last Man on Earth (1964) and a few others I'm sure. Only The Last Man on Earth approached the same weird feeling of isolation for me as Target Earth.

You are aware, aren't you, that it is out in VHS and DVD? I just checked amazon.
PS, I have it in DVD.

Yes, thanks. I just checked my wallet...it'll have to wait!

I have the short story (Deadly City) and read it again recently and so I am "playing" the movie in my head. My version!

That will have to do for now, Gary. If I get a copy or otherwise see it soon, I'll write some more.

When my budget is made up, most of it is assigned to the purchase of books. Movies I get mostly by opportunity -- if I come across a title I'd wanted or that looks interesting and it is a "can't pass it up" bargain.

The few titles I actually own mean that much more to me because of the serendipitous aspect of each one, be it DVD or VHS or because they came from some kind soul as a gift and gifts are, as you know, very wonderful.

If a title comes up on TV and I get to see it, or, better still, get to record it, that's a treat, too.

I recently watched a clip from Target Earth on-line and that snippet was pretty cool, not only because it featured the robot attack (that infernal beam of death!) but because it was even available. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/213915/target_earth/

The trailer was available a couple of days ago on IMDb and it was pretty exciting, and seeing Kathleen Crowley's character running through the bleak and empty streets is what prompted me to start this thread.

I don't know why the trailer was subsequently removed.

Those empty streets are creepy as though something ominous has happened for real. They are supposed to have taken advantage of a quiet Sunday morning t get those shots. And judging by the gloomy look of some of those shots I would imagine they were taken shortly after first light.
